Considering the tough competition out there, you may have only a few seconds to impress an interviewer with your resume.

Think about it, there are probably hundreds of applications to consider, and it takes time process all applications for a vacant position, so your resume needs to stand out. But how do you write a compelling resume?

In this article, I will be writing about the best tips that you can use to make your resume stand out from the rest.

To give a quick definition, your resume is a document that presents your qualifications and work experience in a formal and professional format. The content of your resume will help an interviewer decide if you are qualified for the job and whether you fit the perfect image of the candidate they need to fill a vacant position in the company.

I always advise my readers to write their resumes instead of handing it out to a stranger online. It is quite easy, after reading this article; you will know how to write an outstanding resume.

It is best if you write your resume independently because no one else can describe your professional qualities better than you. When you have finished writing your resume, you should send it to your recruitment agent for a professional review.

So, here are my best tips on how to write a resume that will stand out:

Avoid sending out a generalised resume

The first thing you should have in mind before you start writing a resume is to customise the content in your resume according to the job posting. To catch the attention of your interviewer, you must tailor the content of your resume to match the job you are applying for.

It would help if you customised your resume for a particular job by including particular keywords from the job posting in your resume.

This is what you can do; first, read the job description very carefully. You should only proceed to write the resume when you fully understand the job description.

Next, start writing your resume while considering your experiences and skills that can help you perform excellently if you get that particular job.

Your interviewer is only interested in finding the perfect candidate who can understand the company’s vision, this is a candidate who can blend with the already existing team at the company and contribute to achieving the organisations goals.

Keep it short

Another great tip you should apply when writing a resume is to keep it short. The content on your resume should not occupy more than two pages.

This is an excellent tip for new candidates who are just starting their search for a job in their field. However, if you have gathered many years of experience, your resume may exceed two pages when writing the resume, because of your extensive working experience.

It helps to keep your resume short and precise. Please focus on the important points that show you are the best candidate for the job. If you write a short resume, it will be easier for the interviewer to find and understand these qualities and consider you for the job.

Write a professional resume

Your resume will stand out from the rest if you write it professionally. This is what you should do; please avoid the use of fancy fonts when writing your resume. You should use a regular font as seen on formal documents. Also, choose a font size that is easy to read.

You should also avoid the use of coloured fonts when writing your resume. Please do not attempt to highlight particular points in your resume by changing the colour of the font. It is best to write formal documents, such as your resume, in black coloured font.

Do not include personal details in your resume

Your interviewer is interested in what makes you the perfect candidate for the job. They are not going to be impressed if you have hobbies or interests that are not related to the job you are applying to. It is best to avoid including information such as your hobbies or personal interests when writing a resume.

Always focus on highlighting your proficiencies that align with the company’s interests.

Send your resume for a professional review

It is always a great idea to have your resume reviewed by professionals at your recruitment agency. The main idea is to have a different and professional perspective of your resume. After an assessment is done, it will be ascertained whether your resume is perfect for the job application.

In conclusion, each section of your resume should be adequately labelled to help your interviewer find the information they need easily.

Please feel free to use these tips, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you are not sure how to proceed while writing your resume.
